Female Entrepreneurs Use Bartering

Bartering is a system for exchanging one commodity for another. Female entrepreneurs who wish to be successful know that networking for potential bartering purposes is as important as networking for potential clients. In fact, finding the resources you need to run your business is top priority.

Most women's associations, however, do not have a formalized barter exhange program; this is why I've created one for Tennessee businesswomen at The New Tennessee Woman website. You can and should create one for your business too. Men typically get a business loan from a bank or angel investor; women, unfortunately, turn to credit cards. Bartering puts women on equal footing, sharing information, databases, skills and knowledge without incurring debt. Each party keeps a "running tab" for the year, giving generously; at the end of the year, they "settle up" and reconcile the balance. Another scenario is to share on a "per project" basis. Honestly assess the value of each barter exchange; agree to the terms and fulfill them. There isn't any reason why women should undercut or undervalue what they have to offer. Treat the exchange just like money has been exchanged--fair value for quality service.

I am hoping there will be a Renaissance of bartering among women who will truly tap into the skills and knowledge of other women in ways that will benefit both.
